Basics in Rummy

• Cards - Which we call DECK - Which contains 52 Cards.
• Ace(A) 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Jack(J) Queen(Q) King(K) = 13 Number of Cards
•  Above 13 Cards Available in 4 Different "Suits" - Below Picture we can see

So Every Suit Contains 13 Cards. So 4 Suits * 13 Cards = 52 Cards

Other than Above 52 Cards, One Joker is there Usually with a Joker Symbol on it. So 52+1=53 Cards

2 Players can use 1 Set of Deck ; 52 Cards + 1 Joker.
2 - 6 Players use 2 Sets of Deck.; 104 Cards + 2 Jokers.

All Cards are put face down, Each player picks a card and shows to everybody. The player with the lowest card deals first. He is the Called the Dealer for that Round. Dealer Shuffles the Deck and offers the Left Side person to Cut the Deck. The Dealer distributes 13 cards, 1 Card at a Time, face down, beginning with the player on his Right, and ending with himself, Ant clockwise around the table.

The Stock - When the Dealing is complete, the balance cards of the deck is placed face down in the center of the table, within reach of all players. This forms the stock or Called "Stock Pile"

The Upcard - Before Play begins, The Dealer Turns over the top card of the stock pile and places it face up on the table next to the stock. This is the "Upcard" or "Open Card" or "Discard Pile"

Play - The Player on the Dealer's Right has the first turn. Each player's turn must begin with a Draw (Draw Means = Picking a Card) and end with a Discard (Throwing back the card).
 A Player may Draw a single card from either the top of the Discard pile, OR From the top of the stock Pile

Once the Game is Finished, the Winner "Melds" the Cards and shows to every body. All Players checks and declares him the Winner

Sequence / Run
Same Suit Cards having Sequence of Numbers. Out of 13 Cards we have to make Minimum 2 Groups of Sequence. The Only Condition applies is One Set Should be a Pure Set without Joker. We can make a Sequence with 3 or 4 Cards

Set / Triplet
Same Rank (Number) of Cards without Same Suit. We can make a Set with 3 or 4 Cards

Example:-
Out of  13 Cards we can make 2 Pure Sequence, One Sequence with a Joker, and a Tripplet.

Any Player should Start to Make First a Pure Sequence.

So A Player has to Start Making the said cards, who ever makes valid sets and declares, he will be the winner for that Round.

After Winning a Game the Opponents Declares their cards. We We will Separate those cards which are not proper Sets / Sequences and Score the Cards. Lets See the scoring Pattern.

"J,Q,K,A" Scores 10 Points Each, other Balance 9 Cards Scores to their Rank / Face Value. Like 2 Card - Scores 2 Points, 3 Card Scores 3 Points.. Like wise other cards. What ever be the rummy Variants Scoring is unique in all variants.

Now we should Know What are the Types of Scoring is Done in Rummy. Below are the Details

We have above 4 Variants Playing gin Rummy, but actually when we play with our friends, or in Clubs we use 2 Type of Variants. One is Points Rummy and Other is Pool Rummy which are the most common. We will See what are the indepth details. Actual the above 4 are used in Online Sites.

Deals Rummy:- This Type of Game is Playing 2,3 or 6 Games and Declares the winner. Which are Called Best of 2 Game. Out of the Deals what ever it may be 2,3 or 6, the Least scorrer wins the Match

Points Rummy:- Usually In India we have points rummy saying that each Point Value is Fixed to Monet and Played. Fixing Value to Score is the main theme. In Clubs we play from Rs1 to Rs100 also. It means If you win a Game and your Opponent have a Score of 10 points, and you're playing Each Point for Value for Rs10 then your Opponent have to pay you 10 Points * Rs 10 = Rs.100.

Pool Rummy:- In India we have 101 or 201 Target of Points where every player tries to score less number of points. Example there are 6 players playing in a Table, and you declare the game. We maintain a Score Sheet where a Table shows with Columns with your Name. Rows will have serial number 1 means Round 1. Winner will have Zero Score and Opponents scores will be written accordingly. The Person who leaves behind the Targetted final Score and Pushes others to above the Score is the Winner. When we play for money, we have different in Different sites. We can Play from 10 Rs to Rs 10000 also.

Tournaments :- Which are Organized by Clubs and Various Rummy Sites. Usually they are Scored Based Pool rummy

Everyone wants to win and if you win your games with some style and applying some tricks, it acts like the cherry on the top. Most of us play card games with our friends and family members and we feel really bad if we loose and it makes our day if we win, so why not learn some rummy tricks and tips that might help you win some rummy games:

Rummy Trick 1 – Making pure sequences
The first thing a rummy player must focus upon is to make pure sequences. As per the common rummy rules, you should aim at making two sequences from which one should be pure sequence. This rummy trick helps you in minimizing the points that you get even if you loose. A related rummy tip or trick here is to use the Joker to make the second sequence.

Rummy Trick Tip 2 – Using more than three cards in a sequence
People think that they can only use three cards to make a sequence and have to make a set with four cards but a player can use more than three cards too to make a sequence (pure sequence or a sequence with a joker).

Rummy Trick Tip 3 – Discarding cards that carry high points
Cards like Jack, Queen, King and Ace carry the highest points and the trick here is to discard high points cards first so that even if you loose the game, you dont get a lot of points. This rummy trick does not recommend you to just discard high point cards, the tip is to think carefully when discarding the high point or low point card/s. Also, if the opponent declares and you still have some idle high point cards and you also have a joker, use the joker to make the sequence with the high point cards to minimize the points.

Rummy Trick Tip 4 – Using Jokers Wisely
If you get a joker, just dont fix the use of that joker i.e. keep thinking about different ways to use the joker/s because you would find that there are more than one way to use the joker. Also, as rummy rules need you to make at least two sequence, you can use the Joker to make one non-pure sequence too.

Rummy Trick Tip 5 – Keeping an eye on the cards of the opponent
This is one of the advanced rummy trick that players learn with experience but once learned, it will help you a lot. The tip here is to remember the card your opponent is discarding and the card that the opponent is picking. A player should always think twice before discarding because one should try and make sure that the opponent will not pick that card and thats the exact place where this rummy trick helps. For example, if the opponent has discarded 5 of hearts, it is likely that he will not pick a 6 or 4 of hearts so if you have 4 or 6 of hearts as the idle card, you can discard it safely as the chances that the opponent will pick that card are lesser (not zero). Also, if you discarded a 7 of spades and the opponent picked that card, it means that the opponent is either making a sequence of spades that has a 7 in it or a set of 7. Here, the trick is to remember the interest area of the opponent and not discard a nearby card and try to discard any other card.

The above mentioned rummy tricks and tips are not going to guarantee your win in each and every rummy game but when you apply these tricks while playing rummy, you soon will realize that the number of games that you win has gone up. So, what else do you need

Some useful Tips & Tricks while playing Indian Rummy

Discard high points cards - Aces & picture cards are high points cards in 13 cards rummy. When discarding the card ensure that it is not helpful to your opponent (usually the person who will play right after you). This will ensure that even if you lose a game, the penalty points are minimal.

Focus on making the 2 required sequences as soon as possible - Remember that one of the sequence has to be a pure sequence. This trick will help even if you lose the game and ensures that you wont get the sum of points of all cards in hand.

More than 3 cards in a  sequence - If you have got more cards of the same suit, a pure sequence can be made with 3 or more cards.

Use joker(s) carefully - Joker(s) could make wins much easier. before using a joker it is important to get one pure sequence in place quickly. In the event you are losing the game, it would be a good idea to use the joker(s) with the high point cards (ace and picture cards) to minimize the penalty.

Focus on your opponents cards - Rummy is a game of skill and like chess, a good memory helps in deciding your tactical moves. Rummy is ultimately a draw & discard game and it is important to remember the cards picked and discarded by your opponents. You need to judge why your opponents are picking a certain card and decide your discard strategy accordingly. In fact this is one of the most important aspects of the game and can be developed with a lot of practice.

Like Pool Rummy or Point Rummy??

It is Likely said that TRUE TEST for the skill of a Rummy Player can only be tested in Pool Rummy Table. This is Designed around a tourney format, Pool Rummy needs player to play his best in every single game.

In regular Points Rummy format, player has a chance to recover huge losses through huge gains. But in pool rummy format, losses are a sunken cost and cannot be recovered.

Below is how the points system works in Pool Rummy : –

1)      For every Game, winner will attracts zero points and the losers attract the number of points in the hand on that Show.

2)      As soon as a player reaches the respective Pool Rummy Point Count - such as 101 in 101 Pool or 201 in 201 Pool, the player loses his seat at the table and is deemed to be eliminated from the tournament. 101 and 201 are the most popular game formats each expected to last about 6-7 games and 14-15 games respectively. These figures can vary on the basis of the skill level of the players.

3)      The last person to remain on the table, that is the last man still standing with a point score of less than 101/201 etc, is declared to be the winner on the table.

How are the winnings decided?

The winnings of the Pool rummy are pre-decided based on the number of players on the Table. The Card-room / Or Gaming Website deducts a standard rake (Service Charge) on the Pool Rummy which is slightly higher than the Rake on a Points Rummy Game. However, unlike in a Points Rummy Game, where the rake (Service Charge) is deducted on each Game, in a Pool Rummy Game the rake is deducted only once at the beginning of the Pool and hence, turns out to be much lower than the rake contributed on Points Rummy.
